Paignton - For your leisure and pleasure

1
It was the beach and the central location of Paignton that attracted us here, and the fact that Paignton
has a wealth of attractions and nature right on it's doorstep.

Please view the links below to see how much there is to see and do around the Torbay area.

And remember, if you don't want to do anything there is a wonderful beach just 2 minutes from our front door
- Perfect for doing just nothing on!

Sub-Tropicana on the English Riviera

The Bay around which the towns of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham rest is the shape of a horseshoe facing the southeast and that makes
it a perfect suntrap.

The heights of Dartmoor, immediately to the
North West, protect the Resort from the
prevailing winds and the gulf stream brings it's warmer waters into the bay.

The end result is a climate that is much milder than the rest of the UK; the winters are mild and short, giving way to the flower-filled warmth of
an early spring. Summer really does seem to linger longer, with October and November very often mild enough to enjoy outdoor activities.

This climate creates a haven for many sub-tropical plants, in particular the famous Torbay Palms (Cordyline Australis) that line the streets and fill the parks.

Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway
1
Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway runs from Paignton for seven miles along the spectacular Torbay coast, to Churston and through the wooded slopes bordering the Dart estuary to Kingswear

The scenery is superb, with seascapes right across Lyme Bay to Portland Bill on clear days.  Approaching Kingswear is the beautiful River Dart, with its fascinating watercraft, and on the far side, the olde worlde town of Dartmouth and the famous Britannia Royal Naval College, Butterwalk, Bayard’s Cove and Dartmouth Castle.

This series of photos were taken on a grey December day, but nevertheless Brixham makes an interesting day-trip, with it's Marina and working harbour, connections to Operation Overlord during World War II and as the landing place of William of Orange in 1688.
